The 9.75" X 2.5" filter cartridge is the most
common in the world. You can buy Model 77 with full confidence
that you'll always be able to find replacement cartridges for
it. You can even buy them (Heaven forbid!) from someone
other than us. Like Sears or your unfriendly giant neighborhood
discount store. Even though you can get the size at retail
stores, you'll seldom be able to find the variety or the very
highest quality cartridge you'll get from us.
While we don't preach conformity in all areas of life, there
are sometimes advantages to sticking with the normal. America's
junk yards are full of wonderful one-of-a-kind items whose
owners couldn't find a small replacement part.
Our Default Cartridge--The
One You Get If You Don't Specify Another--Is Our Choice As Best
All-Around Performer: The MatriKX KX1.
Our first choice for all-around performance is the MATRIKX
KX-1. The KX1 is an unchallenged chemical cartridge known in
the industry as "the chlorine guzzler" because of its
incredible 20,000 gallon capacity for chlorine removal. What we
like, though, is its 750-gallon rating for chloroform removal.
Chloroform is a by-product of chlorination--one of the thousands
of chlorine by-products known collectively as trihalomethanes (THMs).
Chloroform is difficult to remove and is generally accepted by
industry and regulatory agencies as a surrogate for many other
chemicals. In other words, a filter that removes
chloroform is generally assumed to remove many other chemicals
as well. Therefore, the 750-gallon chloroform rating on the KX1 offers assurance that the filter will remove a very
broad range of chemical contaminants from about a year's worth of normal
drinking water. The KX1 offers great protection against
pesticides, herbicides, organics, VOCs. And I should
mention that it produces great tasting water.

Our First Alternative Is the
MatriKX PB-1--A Good Chemical Cartridge That Also Removes Lead
and Cysts.
As first alternative, we offer (at no increase in original
purchase price, although you'll have to pay more for it as a
replacement) the MatriKX PB-1. The PB-1 is
a serious chemical and chlorine remover with ion-exchange resin
added to give it the ability to remove lead and other heavy
metals. It also is rated for cyst removal, so you are
assured protection against giardia and cryptosporidium.
The PB-1 has less carbon than the MatriKX KX1 and consequently
considerably less capacity for chlorine and general chemical
removal.
